Industrial design

Factors to be considered while designing equipment for industries (based on personal experience)

1. Equipment should be designed so that there is no downtime, which will result in loss of production. Reliability is very important and if the production of a product or material stops for a few hours, the turnover of  the factory is affected

2.  Design should be kept simple, it is easier to manufacture, test and install . The equipment can be commissioned quickly and if there is any failure of  the module, the service engineer should be able to quickly replace it with spares available.

3. Use the minimum number of  components, parts or raw material. This makes design simpler, quicker and reduces mistakes. The equipment can be manufactured more quickly, since fewer parts are to be ordered. Each part costs money, so fewer the parts, lower the cost of  the equipment. Since the sales price is fixed, this results in a higher profit margin.

4. Always design for the worst case conditions, maximum voltage fluctuations, highest humidity levels. If  the equipment works properly  under non-ideal conditions, it will work well under normal operating conditions also.
